FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CELEBRATE THE 161ST ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST WOMEN'S RIGHTS CONVENTION SENECA FALLS, NY, July 2, 2009 – You are cordially invited to visit Seneca Falls this July 17th – 20th to take part in a celebration of women’s rights. Convention Days 2009 will include a variety of events to commemorate the 161st anniversary of the 1848 women’s rights convention, which was the first momentous step on the long road to women’s suffrage.The festivities will kick-off at the Heritage Area Visitor Center (115 Fall Street) at 5:30pm on Friday, July 17th with the annual community service award presentation. This year’s recipient, Reverend Marilyn Foster, is the pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Seneca Falls. As the first female pastor of the church, Reverend Foster has been serving the community for over 10 years. At 7:30pm, visitors can take a trip over to Mynderse Academy (105 Troy Street) and enjoy the collaborative sounds of the Girlz Choirs of Seneca Falls, NY and Lexington, MA. Following the concert at 8:30pm, One Voice Alliance (OVA) will open a Women’s Film Festival with the showing of “The Girl Effect” and “Heroic Girlz,” two uplifting films about girls’ achievement. A forum discussion will follow. On Saturday, July 18th, at noon, people of all ages are welcome to join in a march from Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s home on Washington Street, through the National Women’s Hall of Fame (76 Fall Street), to the First Presbyterian Church on Cayuga Street. At the church, the Girlz Choirs will offer a musical celebration of women’s history. At 1:00pm, events at the church will continue as the National Women’s Hall of Fame presents Inductee Dr. Judith Pipher, who will deliver a keynote address about women and girls in science. As a long-time professor of astronomy at the University of Rochester and an active researcher within the scientific community, Dr. Pipher will offer a unique insider’s perspective of this timely topic. Later in the evening at Mynderse Academy, OVA will present “Pray the Devil Back to Hell.” The film, produced by Abby Disney, chronicles the story of courageous Liberian women who came together to end a civil war and bring peace to their shattered country; the content of this film may not be appropriate for all age groups. A forum will follow the film, led by Marilyn Tedeschi, President of the Greater Rochester Branch of the AAUW. Events on Sunday, July 19th will include an old time baseball game, played in full period dress, by a team from the Genesee Country Village and Museum. Spectators are welcome to join in the fun at 2pm in People’s Park where Cayuga Lake Creamery will also be hosting an ice cream social. Throughout the entire weekend and on Monday, the Women’s Rights National Historical Park will provide visitors with living history presentations, illustrated programs and walking tours.
