Mourning the Passing of Dr. Sally K. Ride

The National Women's Hall of Fame mourns the passing of trailblazing astronaut, Dr. Sally K. Ride, a 1988 Inductee. Dr. Ride passed away on July 23, 2012 at the age of 61.

Sally Ride rocketed to fame in 1983 when she became the first American woman in space aboard the Challenger.  After retiring from NASA in 1987, Dr. Ride became a science fellow at the Center for International Security and Arms Control at Stanford University.  In 1989, she joined the faculty at the University of California San Diego as a professor of physics and director of the California Space Institute.  Dr. Ride founded Sally Ride Science in 2001 to support girls' and boys' interests in science, technology and math.  She served as the company's President & CEO.
